چکیده
I T IS WELL DOCUMENTED that platelet-thrombi are found during some inflammatory processes, but the exact mechanisms involved are still unknown. The authors demonstrated’3 the appearance of platelet-clumping substance in heparinized rabbit plasma and a concomitant decrease in the circulating platelet count after the intravenous injection of high molecular weight substances such as bacterial endotoxin and agar-solution or adrenaline. A similar platelet-clumping substance was also detected in plasma of patients suffering from acute infectious diseases or thrombosis. ’4 Our analysis2’3 of this substance has indicated that it differs from adenosine diphosphate (ADP), thrombin, serotonin, adrenaline or thrombocyte agglutinating factors ( TAg or TAg’).5 Though its chemical structure is still obscure, a similar platelet-clumping substance appearing in rabbit plasma after its acidification to specified pH values commonly encountered in acidosis or in inflammatory tissue is described in this paper.

The authors previously reported that platelet-clumping substance (SHIMAMOTO and YAMAZAKI, 1958)1) was detected in heparinized plasma from rabbits administered adrenaline or high molecular weight substance such as agar solution and bacterial endotoxin by an intravenous injection.2) The plateletclumping substance also came to be observed in vitro of ter weak acidification of plasma in the presenc...

I N 1958, Shimamoto et al.’ reported platelet aggregation induced by hepari iized plasma of rabbits treated with bacterial endotoxin, and concluded that this was due to an appearance of platelet-clumping substance in plasma. These results were confirmed in vitro by Des Prez, Horowitz and Hooks in 1961. Since then, many investigators have reported adenosine diphosphate (ADP), thrombin, adrenalin...

متن کاملPlatelet-induced clumping of Plasmodium falciparum-infected erythrocytes from Malawian patients with cerebral malaria-possible modulation in vivo by thrombocytopenia.
Platelets may play a role in the pathogenesis of human cerebral malaria (CM), and they have been shown to induce clumping of Plasmodium falciparum-parasitized red blood cells (PRBCs) in vitro. Both thrombocytopenia and platelet-induced PRBC clumping are associated with severe malaria and, especially, with CM. In the present study, we investigated the occurrence of the clumping phenomenon in pat...
